Audacity Tutorials - How to use Audacity - Part 10 - Removing Vocals
In this Audacity software tutorial, we’ll show you how to remove vocal tracks. A great way to create your own Karaoke tracks!
So, let’s start by opening Audacity and the new audacity window opens. So, let’s say we want to remove vocals to create a karaoke tracking song. Go to Project > Import Audio, and then select a song. Just make a note that, most of the songs are copyrighted. So be very careful about what you do with them. You can’t just post them on the web or use it in public without copyright information. That’s not said here for legal advice. But let’s better be careful about what we do. Select a portion of the song here and Zoom in, to find the audio and the vocals. Hit Play and look for vocals, taking a little bit longer portion of the song.
Now, take that portion of the audio and click Copy, and then open up a new project, and Paste it there. Here is our audio on the new project. Click Play and we could hear fairly easy vocals that could be replaced. To replace it, go to Track on the left and click on the dropdown menu and select Split Stereo Track. In this example, the audio is bounced on most tracks. Sometimes, you have audio just on one track, and you can find that out by clicking Solo and playing on it. But, here we have it on both. So now, let’s highlight the Right track as the bottom track, and see the top track in light grey. Now go to Effect > Invert, and now we could see this bottom track inverted. Now, go back to the right track drop down and select Mono and also go to the left track and select Mono and now click Play. Now we can hear the audio has cancelled itself out.
Now, we can use it as the karaoke track. Save the track (File > Save Project) in a new folder called ‘Karaoke’ and give the file a name (‘test 1’) and click Save.
If you want to add your own vocals to it, go to Project > New Audio Track, and then click Record. Now record your vocal and you can see a new recorded track. Play it back again, and now you can hear your vocal recorded. This is how you can record your own audio.
That’s how we can remove and replace vocals in Audacity.
