What Is the Formula Bar and Why Is It Important?
Excel predominantly deals with a variety of formulas and functions. Some data might be a direct result of specific formulas and others might be a connecting link that provides a resultant value to other formulas. So, how do you find which formula corresponds to the value and which formula is used to find the resultant value?
Here is where the Formula Bar comes into play.
The formula bar is one of the most important tools in Excel. Using this bar, you can write formulas, view them, and search for formulas. Even though you can enter the formulas from the cells, the Formula bar will be useful when you have to enter long formulas and refer to them. Not only does the formula bar shows the formulas, but it also displays the data of any data type present in the cell.
Parts of a Formula Bar in Excel?
The formula bar is found below the main menu ribbon. It consists of:
- Name Box: This shows the cell or cell range selected.
- Insert Function (fx): This contains the list of formulas based on category and you can refer to or use them. The X and ✔ are used to close and enter the function respectively.
- Down-arrow: the dropdown arrow to the right of the formula bar is used to extend it when the formulas are lengthy. You can also drag the formula bar to extend it.
